Oh wow…. A few of my Substackers have been in Paris recently! You all provide me with a different glimpse into an extraordinary city. These photos are truly awe-inspiring. I might have to check out YouTube to see if there are any clips of music within such places, but it would never capture the breathtaking experience of Being There. Your whole body would be involved!
Thank you so much for sharing this. Here’s hoping this has helped soothe some of the angst you’ve been through this year. Take care dear Stella.
Thank you, Beth! Yes, hearing music in such sacred spaces are truly a unique experience. Here is a clip from YouTube: https://youtu.be/81m0aJnJKzw?si=t2r_tLnFIBdApNCs A string quartet playing Bach at St. Chapelle. The acoustics were incredible! It was definitely memorable.
Thank you, Shital. Something about stained glass windows, no? I agree with you on this. The combination of light, color and translucency. The visuals are stunning.
Wonderful words and images of some beautiful places. Thank you for sharing. There is nothing quite like hearing music (for me particularly, choral music) in a church or cathedral. Often a profoundly moving experience.
Thank you, Ralph! Absolutely. It was one of our memorable experiences during this trip. We will remember it for a long time. I am curious about choral music and would love to experience that as well.
About thirtysomething years ago I had the privilege of hearing a touring Russian choir performing in a church local to me at the time in southern England. First half of the concert was folk-music orientated, the second, more classical, orthodox pieces. Words are inadequate to describe the experience.
I totally understand that feeling of not being able to capture the essence, especially in such grandiose spaces where light is magical. Your photos are divine, though!

Such large beautiful places! I love stained glass windows. That photo where people are taking photos is really nice.

Oh, such a beautiful experience! The fact that you remember it from 30 years ago. Thank you for sharing, Ralph.
Stella, these images are stunning. I can’t believe how you captured all these intricate details in your black and white images. Beautiful work!
Thank you, Manuela!
